My husband was wearing a full face helmet when a car driver made a left turn into my husband’s oncoming lane.
The only thing that the helmet did was keep him from dying instantly. My husband fought to stay alive and suffered very serious injuries including his right eye having to be removed, his spleen removed, his liver repaired, his left shoulder shattered, multiple facial fractures and the most serious of all, brain stem injury and massive brain injury. If my husbands kidneys and liver didn’t start shutting down, he would have lived in a vegetative state for the rest of his life. Three weeks later when the trach was removed Tim’s parents and I watched my husband slowly die. He stopped breathing 19 1/2 hours after the trach was removed. A helmet did not spare my husband from severe brain injury. The doctors think that Tim could have been blind in his left eye from the accident along with having his right eye removed. Please realize that this can happen to you if you ride a motorcycle. Think how having even one of these injuries could impact your life and your families life. Please, wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, it is the only thing that protects your head.
You can survive a broken arm, you can survive a severe leg injury, but there are very little chances you can escape from death if your skull hurts the ground or any hard object at a certain speed and if you do, the consequences may be so terrible you’d wish you died.
Please, wear a helmet every time you go for a ride. Do it for all those you love and who love you.

I just bought a motorcycle. I am 30 years old. I have never had a street bike before but I did ride dirt bikes as a kid. The reason I bought the bike is because I’m tired of paying 250 bucks a month just to drive back and forth to work. My wife is a full time student and she spends at least that much if not more each month. My father use to ride. He told me about his 2 accidents he was in. My mother and step father ride. They almost hit the edge of a bridge once. I guess I’ll have to learn for myself how to ride and be a careful rider. I’ve only been out on the bike a few times now and it is very nerve racking. To be honest, after reading all this it scares me to even get back on my bike. There are however fatal car accidents every day. I am no religious nut, but I know where I stand with the Lord. I am not afraid to die. Oh sure, I’m not looking forward to the “sting” of death, but I know there will come a day when we all will meet our maker. I do believe I have a time and a place set aside for me. Be it in a motorcycle accident, car accident, work accident, old age…….whatever. I have a loving wife of 12 years and 3 beautiful children. I will wear a helmet. I don’t want to increase the chance of never being able to see, hold, hug, or kiss them again. Nevertheless, gas prices have gone trough the roof and certin people like me need to make the necessary adjustment to keep that gas bill as low as possible. I’ll be traveling about 55 miles round trip. I will be able to cut my gas bill by about 65%. Hopefully Obama, if elected, will follow through with his promise of lowering gas prices. Get it back down around the 2 dollar mark and I’ll sell my bike. It’s only been around 50 degrees here and I’ve froze my ass off the few times I’ve been out on it. :]

My sister-in-law was just in a motercycle accident Sunday and if she wouldn’t have been wearing her helmet she would have been dead. The helmet took most of the blow. She paid a little more and got one of the best helmet and I think that was the best thing she did. She still got hurt but she’s not dead and she is going to recover fully. Everyone should have to wear a helmet.

I feel so bad for the people that dont have that person becaues of a bike. I have a bike and my brain tells me I probably shouldnt be riding this thing. At at 30 mph hour its like taking a head dive off a 3 story building at 40 its like a 4 story and and 50 its like a 5 storey window, if you jump of a 4 story6 window and land on your feet you will die from the impact the only people that survive crashes like that are if they dont hit anything. To wear a helmet is like living a lie, it just makes you be paralized instead brain dead. And knowing how my mom drives it doesnt suprise me that so many people die from bike crashes. I just wonder if i buy a cruise bike do accident rates go down over sports bikes. I alway drive slow on yellow line roads its a lot of work riding a bike and if you stupid riding bike eventually you will die. Maybe not the first time or the second time but one day that car will not look to go in the left lane a mere fender bender with cars but death to you.

Hey Mr Doctor, he was brain dead so that question or that asnwer is no cause even though he wore one he could say bye, are you a moron, stop saying your a Dr it put other real doctors to shame. And if he could say bye trust me that would be the least of his problems. Think about it well at least i wore a helmet soi can say bye before i die. Lots of people die suddenly with no control over there deaths and they dont say bye so whats your point. And the girl that wrote that stupid bike drivers like us need to hear that you might evne move somone directly to finaly give up their bikes. I am getting rid of mine at the end of the summer. Its not as fun as i thought and i like my life i want to live. At least know he did nothing wrong it was out of his control and i would sue that girls insurance company to the hilt and her civily for involuntary manslaughter and punitive damages for your pain your going through. Most states will have her serve prison time. and have her license permantly suspended some states do that as well.

my 17 yr old friend(one of myclosest) was killed in november on his motorcycle. his life was taken and now his friends dont get to see him graduate or go to prom or any of that and his mother is left without her only son(as well as only child). he was infact wearing his helmet but the dumbass old hag who caused his death decided she wanted to drive right in front of him and try and cross 3 lanes of traffic instead of waiting and took his life and almost his girlfriend’s. wearing a helmet does help save lives but its not the only answer and often times you cant blame the rider them self. one cannot control how someone else drives or the risks they are going to take. the victim in these pictures could have been completely that, a victim, he could have been doing everything right and driving cautiously so dont always be quick to blame the rider. however i do believe that wearing a helmet is a necessity and every time i pass someone on a motorcycle and they arent wearing a helmet it upsets me because no one should have to go through the pain of losing someone like that, especially so young…

Wow, this makes me think twice about life!! Today, while I was on my way to school, I saw another student, who had just left campus, laying on the ground, very similar to this guy. He was not moving and laying in a pool of blood. His bike was shattered into pieces. It must of just happened because there were no responders on the scene at that point. Oh yeah, HE WAS WEARING A HELMET, according to authorities, but at impact, his helmet was launched about 20ft thus killing him instantly when his bear head struck the ground. Seeing this first hand, really made me upset today.
I have been riding dirt since I was a kid and love it tremendously! I have never rode street and have been SERIOUSLY considering riding street this summer. Riding street will not be my only means of transpo; I am just looking to ride on occasion and for enjoyment! After reading many of the above posts and seeing this kid laying lifelessly on the pavement is making me reconsider. I DON’T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO.

It’s very sad what happened to your husband, but also keep in mind that his situation was a very individual instance. Your arguing that not wearing a helmet makes no difference; but that argument makes no logical sense. In “most” motorcycle accidents people die from head trauma. If these people would have worn a helmet, than the probability of them living would be higher. There are no absolutes here, one can similarly state that wearing a seatbelt doesn’t make a difference. Every accident is different, and in some, wearing a seatbelt really doesn’t make a difference because of the severity, however in the vast majority of accidents, wearing a seatbelt does make a big difference. Just remember we are speaking generally here, and as described by you helmets dont save lives in all accidents, but they do in most.

Anonymous (13:19:18) :
What I find surprising about every one of these posts is the argument over helmets, and how they don’t prevent broken legs or road rash.
Whats the answer to that?
Whenever I take my bike out, I wear a full faced helmet, and full bodysuit of motorcycle grade leather with armour on the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and spine.
The only thing I am lacking is a neck brace, and apparently there is a new wave of street braces in development that I will definitely consider.
At the end of the day, NOTHING is going to save you when you wrap yourself round a tree at 50mph.. however from accidents described above, coming off the bike at speed and bouncing along the road for a while, full protective equipment has been proven to help.
Sure, it hurts, but I have friends who have came off with even some budget kit and sustained minimal injuries, and a friend who came off on the track at 140mph got up as soon as he got his breath back to check out the damage to his beloved bike.
So, with respect to everyone stating that it is their choice to wear a helmet, and for everyone saying “Helmets must be worn!”, my view is FULL kit must be worn at all times on the bike. If you are oka to risk your life like that, then spare a thought for the paramedics who have to peel you back of the ground again after you were such an arsehole to even think about sitting on the saddle with just a helmet, if that.
My sympathies to the families of the dead, however there should have been warning flags pre-ride when you went out so underprotected.

I am 42 years of age and have recently purchased a bike.
I have not owned a bike for about 20 years and decided after
loosing friends to cancer and the war that I would treat myself
to a bike. I explained to my wife that we are goint to die one day,
please allow me the opportunity to feel the freedom that one does
when riding a bike, or horse. (live in the city)
She bought me a helmet and full racing leathers. While on a cruise
a piece of metal flew into my shoulder. I lost controll and went down
hard. I felt my head hit the road hard, I slid for about 50 yards and
my body slammed into a concrete barrier. I suffered not road rash
,no concusion (spelling) and only a broken wrist and a piece of metal (
a part of what the police said was a brake pad, go figure) in my
shoulder. The doctors said that it was the first time he had ever seen
so much body armour on a motorcyclist, even a back & chest protector.
In short. Things might have been different if I had been hit by a truck
or car. The police still say I should be dead. Looking at the picture
above if the rider had been wearing my suit I think he would still be
alive.

My heart goes out to all of you. I lost my best friend and he was on his bike and no helmet. they say he might have made it if he was wearing one. A lot of good it did him now. My heart goes out to all of you who have suffered from the tragedies mentioned. Here in NH our moto is live free or die (trying) and that many people do for there is no helmet law here. I believe it is a choice as are seatbelts here for adults. When making choices some people do not think outside the box. the traula and pain for those affected sometimes has life long affects. Its your life and your chances ok I get it but if you have kids and a family wear protection so the media doesnt splatter your pic on the front page for all your friends and family to bare witness to the accident scene. My local paper didnt give a rats A** what damage they did. sensationalism sells papers and causes more undo grief and pain. i had the same attitude for years its my life then my daughter was born and my brother in-law the paramedic told me strait up yeah you got a fifty fifty chance if you dont wear your belt but on the chance you do crash and get ejected with your kid strapped in her car seat looking at her crushed dead mommy she”d never get to make a choice cuz her mommas dead. She is sixteen now and I still wear my belt and a helmet and she wears hers.

I was a paramedic for 10 yrs. I put many bodies in a body bag during my days as a medic. So, speaking from first hand experience….here is my view. Yes, helmets save lives. As medics, we used to refer to riders who rode without helmets as organ donors. Yes, that sounds cruel. But, we all saw it over and over again. Will a helmet always save you? NO…. a lot of bikers die from broken necks. Unless there is severe internal trauma….they can usually fix everything except your brain.
Seatbelts saving lives? Yep…they do also. I always tell people the statistics that I saw. I put at least 100 people in body bags who were not wearing a seatbelt in their vehicle. I only cut a seatbelt off of a dead body twice. That says a lot. Also, with airbags in conjunction with a seatbelt…your chances of living through a major accident is pretty good.
With all of this being said….I do have one more belief. I saw many terrible accidents in which the people should have died but were walking around at the scene. I also saw accidents that were pretty minor and the people died. So…I truly believe that no matter how skilled your caregiver is (medic, nurse, doctor) there is someone way above us making the final decision. That was the only way I could emotionally deal with the death that I saw.
For those of you who don’t believe in seatbelts or helmets…my final thought. If I could hook up a wire from my brain to yours and show you the pictures I still have in my head….you may look at things differently.
Thanks all….and God bless you.

hi
bad luck mate were a helmet next time but there wont be a next time hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
racist
Most states will have her serve prison time. and have her license permantly suspended some states do that as well.
i had an accident 2 days ago .it was very scary .my car was smash up very bad and don’ intend to fix it because i don’t plan to drive again.
my 17 yr old friend(one of myclosest) was killed in november on his motorcycle. his life was taken and now his friends dont get to see him graduate or go to prom or any of that and his mother is left without her only son(as well as only child). he was infact wearing his helmet but the dumbass old hag who caused his death decided she wanted to drive right in front of him and try and cross 3 lanes of traffic instead of waiting and took his life and almost his girlfriend’s. wearing a helmet does help save lives but its not the only answer and often times you cant blame the rider them self. one cannot control how someone else drives or the risks they are going to take. the victim in these pictures could have been completely that, a victim, he could have been doing everything right and driving cautiously so dont always be quick to blame the rider. however i do believe that wearing a helmet is a necessity and every time i pass someone on a motorcycle and they arent wearing a helmet it upsets me because no one should have to go through the pain of losing someone like that, especially so young…

WoW!!! I think the FIRST thing MOST of you should do is learn to write. Oh hell… even if you just learn to spell HALF or your words correctly you would be doing alright. SERIOUSLY!!!! helmit? motercycle? weather? dying unnecessary? funneral? (and that’s just a FEW) If you drive your cars as dumb as most of you sound, maybe you should be the ones wearing helmets… in the back of the short bus!
Wearing a helmet should be a personal choice so should wearing a seatbelt, everyone dies one day no matter how many stoopid laws you make you can’t stop people from dying
Kim finally someone that answered with the right grammer and spelling. You said it all.
Proud to be American!
